Hakto is a shortened form of the Zuni name Yamuhakto, which means "He who carries wood on his head." On the Hopi mesas, Hakto Katsina appears during Mixed Dances. The colored vertical lines on the sides of the face are said to be sweat marks. This Katsina thus symbolizes effort and labor, reflecting the life of the Hopi dedicated to the hard work of farming the land.
